A Heart for Helping: Celebrating Vicki’s Compassionate Service

If you’ve ever called or emailed CareNotes, chances are you’ve talked with Vicki, a familiar voice in CareNotes customer service. You’ve most likely experienced her kindness, patience, and genuine desire to help.

After nearly 30 years of dedicated service, Vicki will be retiring in January.
To reflect back on her time at Saint Meinrad, we asked her to answer a few questions.

How did your career begin?  What first brought you to this organization?
My career began with night shift seasonal work in the Key Punch Department at the Abbey Press. We entered catalog requests, mail in orders, and phone orders that were handwritten! I began here because friends and relatives all spoke highly of their experiences at Abbey Press.

What were some of your most memorable moments?
The Christmas busy season for the Call Center started ramping up in September and that season was memorable each year! Phones ringing, internet orders coming through, and tote boxes full of mail in orders. The best customer service team anyone could ask for made it all work successfully.

What made working here meaningful to you?
CareNotes are so well written, and people find them helpful. I love taking calls, and we often do more than just take an order. Customers often want to tell their story.  Perhaps they just lost a loved one; we can take time to listen.  Sometimes customers ask if they can say a short prayer with us.  They want to bless CareNotes and the people who work here.

What will you miss most about working at CareNotes?
I’ll miss my work family; we are all in this together. And, our customers, many who have become friends.

What are you most looking forward to doing with your time?
I plan to visit my children, grandchildren, and brothers more often. I’m also a 25-year active member of the St. Meinrad Volunteer Fire Dept as a Firefighter/EMT. Beyond that, I’m going to travel a bit and learn new interests.

Being a quilter, I have a fabric stash that will certainly outlive me.  So, I look forward to busting into that stash and making more quilts. The hum of a sewing machine is like music to my ears.

If you could share one piece of wisdom, what would it be?
The best things in life are not things.

Is there a motto, quote, or personal guiding principle that sums up your approach to work and life?
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think”  -A.A. Milne
